Graphic Design Forum :: RE: Xerox Phaser 7700
I have a Xerox Phaser 7750GX and it's still under warranty by Xerox, for a few hundred bucks you can get extended warranty like that. It's well worth it, we have them come out once a year or so and do a PM and fix this or that. These printers run so good but I still think the warranty is worth it, ours runs all day and night and is under really heavy use. I would guess you have a bad imaging unit, which is also a consumable that has to be replaced from time to time. _ JoePostscript -- support administrator Expertise: quark xtensions developer, adobe plug... - Read More at This Link..

Digital Printing Forum :: Building Quark pages using xml
Hi Looking at building QuarkXpress 7.3 (intel mac) pages using exported xml files from our database. I am struggling to find 'how to tutorials' anywhere, have built pages in past using other apps and xpress tags, but complete novice with xml. Have extension and imported a file but from that point ...?! At this stage I don't need to know how to wright in xml but just to style and import the supplied text onto the Quark layout. Is anyone doing this or can point me in the right direction, been all over quark site and the net? Many thanks - Read More at This Link..

hi and apologies for the very very late reply!! as soon as you export anything like an eps or tiff etc it flattens and rasterizes transparent areas - like drop shadows. so - when its rasterized it gets the background as you said you can try clipping areas as best possible, and in the raster effects ensure the correct setting are applied relevant to your needs, but i'll hark back to ai files where possible i think this all depends on where your logo's go really - if they head to indy then all will be fine if they head towards quark i'd maybe have a rethink, as it doesnt play with transparency well. if ... - Read More at This Link..

ok - how did you create a composite pdf from quack containing dcs2 files? without third party software... question - why would you create a pdf, then postscript - then distill another pdf? there's no production reason - that i know of - to do that at all - and no logical reason. you effectively create a 2nd generation file by the re-fry. if you have downsampling options then after that re-downsampling then of course there will be differences. ok so nothing you've seen has proven anything to you - but have you actually seen a rip/workflow with the pdf print engine in action? personally i havent but am... - Read More at This Link..

the answers again is no it uses jaws to create these pdf's, and to do that it generates postscript first = dead transparency. so - from quark there is no way at all to keep live transparency - yet it touts itself as supporting transparency. anyone got the number for the advertising standards authority? now i'm not saying that it will screw up every job - the point being that if you use transparency in your quark files, be very careful when going to pdf as it can <not always> screw your files. _ expertise: nothing - Read More at This Link..

David, watch out for BM, he knows some stuff, but sometimes I think his humor is made for the Brits, and the Brits only (just kinding BM) Thats good your printer is working with you. This is the kind ofthing that makes his job in the long run easier, and you more willing to work with him more often. Ifyou have questions, ask away here, someone will fire back at you an answer. It may not always be what you want to hear, but the answers do come. I was a fan of Albert Belle back in the Joey days. This was before the hitting a fan with a baseball and his alcohol abuse. welcome aboard sadly thats not strictly true - i do not believe that in quack 5 or 6 just by holding down the alt key you convert say a quack 7 file...... if you work in quack 6 (or 7) say, and open a quack 5 file that way then it may well work - the point being it is not a forwards compatible method - backwards only. indesign is very very similar to illustrator, so if you have experience in that then picking up indesign is a shallower curve. _ expertise: nothing - Read More at This Link..

Hello all, I'm David and pretty new to the printing world. When I used Quark before, I never had to send to a commercial printing service before. I have had a serious time getting everything in order to print correctly. I've been having a hard time as you might imagine. I'm kind of nervous about the robot and the free flight. But my printer is sure that this will help (he actually signed me up for this site). So, I'm gonna take his advice and see where this goes. David - Read More at This Link..

Hey Joe, Thanks for the offer of help on this, just found out that I'm going to be making more work for myself, apparently the asset management system we're working with won't read the IPTC/EXIF/XMP tags embedded in the files anyways. They have to be entered by hand into their database. So much for interoperability. _ Timothy Boyden Network Administrator MailCoups, Inc. Granted... InDesign had it's issues at first... to be completely honest... it still does... but man... for what Adobe was trying to do with what they *had* to work with? Wow. That's vision. That's listening to your user-base. All that and a pretty butterfly box, too. I think InDesign (even in all it's flawed execution) made everyone take notice. It forced the industry to rethink things and as a result, we ended up going places digitally that we never dreamed of in a strictly PageMaker/Quark world. Designs took on a whole new dimension, copiers and digital presses got better and better to meet demand. I l... - Read More at This Link..

i'd rather buy q2id and pray wonder if they fancy giving that away? my guess is not....... how about, instead of letting some poor misinformed user try to convert a nice clean indesign file with all manner of WORKING transparency, they actually make quack able to handle transparency properly itself first before trying to interpret files that CAN do it. really - what pile of crap is someone going to get from an indesign file like that - and in reality that kind of file is normal these days if anyone here is suckered in by this crap - well - i'd think i'd be surprised.... _ expertise: nothing - Read More at This Link..

On top of that we have quark text, then on top of that we have a cutter guide which is created in Illustrator. This will be just a 100% magenta or 100% black vector line art, no background, no text or any other fancy business like drop shadows etc. this is then brought into a picture box in quark that overlays all the text and art so it has no run-around or background colour. However, using QuarkXPress 3, 4 or 5, I was able to paste the excel table into a picture frame and to obtain the expected result (though only for one-color plate - grayscale documents, for example) when using distiller to make the pdf. My question was why the later versions of Quark (6, 6.5 and 7) doesn't respond to this. Again, many thanks for your response. - Read More at This Link..

Hello geri, These controls are in the box properties and are global to all 4 corners of the box. If you click on the square box tool till it pops out the other types of box tools, will pop out to side. One of them has a pen tool for freehanding boxes with a bezier curves tool. Use that one and make your box, two corners square, click and drag to create the two curved corners. Use some guides to help get the box shape correct. This will give you a box you are seeking. _ JoePostscript -- support administrator Expertise: qua... - Read More at This Link..

Hello Nitey, Man, This is a file war isn't it, strange deal and so mysterious.. if you told me that last paragraph first I would have just laughed. Not that a file name cant cause a problem, but those are all very legal and legitimate file names. As long as there is ONLY one PEERIOD, and all else is alpha-numeric, dash, or underscore, there <should> be no problem.. I personally will never use a space in an image file or PDF but many people do. Yes, that's a major point that beermonster just made. Since we are speaking of converting docs between versions and even more of a nightmare, going backwards not forwards. Anytime you convert between versions it is of highest importance that all your links be updated and current, fonts all activated correctly, that a document is at its full integrity, THEN convert. To do so without having it COMPLETELY squared away will cause all kinds of stuff to go wrong. What beermonster brings up is a great diagnosis I think. Not necessarily. Like I said you have to look at the errors produced to see if they are acceptable to you. PDFX1-A is a strict profile looking for specific things wrong with the PDF file. For instance we use OPI image swapping and the OPI comments embedded in the PDF file will trigger an error with the PDFX1-A preflight profile, but that's acceptable to us because we need the comments. So you really have to look at the details. The main thing to look for is whether all your fonts are embedded, and whether your images are at a resolution you are expecting, like greater than 72 DPI which is only good for screen/web di... - Read More at This Link..

Problem saving Quark Xpress 6 file back to Quark Xpress 5

We are having a problem saving Quark Xpress 6 files back to Quark Xpress version 5. To send a file to a printer we had to resave it as Quark Xpress 5 so that they could work with it, the printer is still using QuarkXPress 5 on Mac OS 9. I created the file on QuarkXPress 6 on OS X 10.3. When do a "save as" to make it a version 5 document, it seems to lose many images and some image boxes. The folks at the printing company said others had been unable to save a file as a version 5 quark document without losing images and some links. Any ideas how to fix this, it doesn't seem to happen with every document and is therefore even more scary?
