We have a G4 running OS X. We bought an external hard drive because we are always getting scratch disk errors when working in Photoshop or Illustrator. I do the same thing in both Quark and InDesign for customers. I have control of the original images and the smaller ones used by designers. As long as the image size is the same, and only the dpi gets changed in photoshop, I have not run into any issues at all (5"x5" at 300dpi high res and 5" x 5" at 72dpi low res).
